Full understanding of histology is essential for diagnosing diseases and practicing pathology. Diagnostic Pathology: Normal Histology 2nd Edition, by Matthew R. Lindberg and Laura W. Lamps, covers the normal histology of every organ system and includes the Expert Consult™ eBook version that allows an enhanced eBook experience. The book is part of the highly regarded Diagnostic Pathology series and can be found as a 448-page hardcover book or as electronic/ kindle edition. The second edition of the book has been thoroughly updated to include new and revised chapters as well as histologic variations, mimics and pitfalls that may cause diagnostic confusion. The book consists of nearly 1800 high quality images; including photomicrographs, gross images, electron micrographs, immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry, and medical drawings.

The book is organized into 14 sections. A detailed table of contents is provided at the beginning of each section for quick reference. This book focuses on the practical knowledge of histology for understanding of the pathological variations of the tissue. Section 1 is an introduction to normal histology and basic histological techniques. This section introduces the reader into the understanding of cells, types of tissues, organ systems and their functions. In this section, the authors describe the most common staining techniques and histology artifacts. At the end of the section, there is also an overview of immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence and electron microscopy of normal tissues.

Within sections 2 to 14, the authors describe each organ system using colorful pictures and concise, easy to read information. Each section portraits its own color coding which makes the book easy to navigate with tissue or organ name on the top of the page. At the beginning of each section, the fundamentals and basic information regarding that system is presented, including the Macroscopic Anatomy, Microscopic Anatomy, Considerations and Variations with pitfalls and artifacts, followed by plenty colorful images of that organ system. The information is provided as bulleted text, tables, key facts, and an extensive index. Multiple slide images on each page contribute to a better understanding of that particular organ tissue and on most images; the main features of each tissue are clearly labeled and are supplemented by an accompanying short text.

The book is an invaluable teaching aid not only to students, but also to residents, fellows and practicing pathologists. It could be used as a reference source for every day practice as it delivers relevant information in a quick but informative way.  This book will serve as a practical, readily accessible source of information, for those who need a rapid, concise histological features of different organs.  Overall, I found this book very valuable and suitable to students and professionals not only in the field of pathology but also for other medical professionals (like radiology, internal medicine, surgery, oncology), and basic research scientists who have an interest in the histology.
